Held over two days, our reinforced concrete (RC) detailing online course is designed to cover the basic principles of RC detailing and provides an introduction and guide to those in the engineering design and construction industry who are likely to be involved with the principles concerning the detailing of RC.
The course highlights the different aspects of the detailing process and their effects on the construction process, in accordance with Eurocode 2 and UK practice, but which are relevant in most areas of the world. We will consider the process from an engineer’s perspective in achieving good practice and economic detailing including the developments associated with computer aided detailing and modern fabrication and construction processes.
Please note that this online version of the course will be split into modules.
The course is suitable for graduates and those employed by design engineers, reinforcement suppliers or building contractors who are required to understand and/or apply good detailing practice used to interpret the designer’s and code requirements, and to how this information is provided in the form of drawings and bending schedules to the reinforcement supplier and construction site.
Aims & Objectives:
On completion of this course delegates will be able to:
- Have an understanding of detailing functions, practice, and conventions.
- Interpret the requirements of applicable codes, including those of Eurocode 2.
- Appreciate the important link between detailing and construction costs.
- Appreciate the important developments in computer aided design and shop automated bar bending processes.
- Determine the most suitable format for detailing and bar scheduling within the given time and financial constraints.
- Define individual responsibilities within the detailing process, apply the appropriate checks and code clauses to ensure compliance.
- Apply the relevant technical requirements and utilise the guidelines and standard details in the detailing of common RC components.
- Apply basic detailing principles for more complex detailing required for precast, prestressed and post-tensioned, water-retaining and marine, and composite slab structures.
Course Outline:
Module 1 – Detailing practice and conventions
- Function of the reinforced concrete detailer and the required output in accordance with Eurocode 2 and national and local authority codes, including BS 8666:2020, ISE/ Concrete Society “Standard Method of Detailing Structural Concrete” (SMDSC), in-house standards, and client requirements.
- Presentation of information on drawings and standard detailing guidelines.
Module 2 – Concrete structures
- Presentation of information on general arrangement, layout and detail drawings. Examples of various concrete structures showing plans, elevations and sections.
Module 3 – Detailing of reinforcement, code requirements and technical specifications
- Detailing considerations and reinforcing steel (rebar) detailing methods. Eurocode 2 (BS EN 1992 and UK National Annex) code requirements. Types of reinforcing bars and fabric, and their specifications and properties. Detailing guidance as per the ISE/ Concrete Society SMDSC manual. Use of propriety systems for starter bars, mechanical couplers, construction joints, etc.
Module 4 – Scheduling of reinforcement
- Bar scheduling presentation methods. Scheduling to the BS 8666:2020 specification (Scheduling, dimensioning, bending and cutting of steel reinforcement for concrete). Bending and cutting guidelines for reinforcing bars other than steel.
Module 5 – Component detailing guidelines for typical concrete elements
- General requirements for all components. Component detailing for slabs, beams, columns, walls, foundations and pile-caps, staircases, corbels, half-joints and nibs (reference to SMDSC manual).
Module 6 – Detailing guidelines for composite slabs
- Review and guidelines for composite slabs (reference to SMDSC manual).
Module 7 – Detailing guidelines for prestressed and post-tensioned concrete elements
- Review and guidelines for common prestressed and post-tensioned concrete elements, including flat slabs (reference to SMDSC manual).
Module 8 – Detailing guidelines for precast concrete elements
- Review and guidelines for common precast concrete elements (reference to SMDSC manual).
Module 9 – Detailing guidelines for water-retaining and marine structures
- Review and guidelines for water-retaining and marine structures (reference to SMDSC manual).
Module 10 – Detailing guidelines for welded steel mesh
- Review and guidelines for the use of welded steel mesh.
Module 11 – Review and discussion
Mode of Delivery:
The course is designed to be an interactive process with continuous delegate feedback / discussion based around individual experience and requirements set against the different topics covered in the Course content to include exercises. Use of A2 Drawing Boards.
Benefits of Attending:
- The confidence, ability and understanding to detail simple RC elements regardless of previous knowledge / experience.
- An overall understanding of where detailing fits within the construction process and the theory behind it.
- An appreciation of flexible good practice detailing and the importance of error reduction within the completed drawings and schedules.
Intended For:
ONC / HNC Civil / Structural Technicians and Detailers, ideally from a Designer / Consultant background OR other Construction Industry Professionals wishing to gain a basic insight and understanding of the RC detailing process. Previous experience in detailing is not a pre-requisite.
Pre-Course Requirements:
Delegates will need to have the following available:
- A copy of the ISE/Concrete Society “Standard Method of Detailing Structural Concrete (4th Edition)”
- Calculator
- Pencil and eraser
- Scale ruler
Testimonials – what our clients say...
Civil Engineer, COWI UKThe Tutor was very knowledgeable and provided a good guide to reinforcement detailing. This course will be very helpful to me when checking reinforcement drawings and discussing reinforcement with the detailers.
