Transport decisions are political and Transport Planners need to be able to gain the support of politicians and local interest groups if their schemes are to come to fruition. Transport professionals need to have good consultation skills. Indeed, Consultation is identified as a key skill area for Transport Planners as part of the Transport Planning Professional (TPP) qualification. This course is aimed at professionals who want to understand more about public and stakeholder consultation.
Aims & Objectives:
On completion of this course, delegates will be able to:
- Define what consultation is;
- Understand the importance of a consultation strategy;
- Understand different types of stakeholders, what they are looking for from consultation and how they like to be consulted;
- Describe the various techniques for consulting with stakeholders and their benefits and shortcomings;
- Understand the importance of active listening;
- Be aware of key consultation issues associated with different types of development proposals; and
- Be better at thinking on their feet and dealing with surprises

Mode of Delivery:
The course will be made up of presentations, group exercises and discussion sessions.

This course is aimed at those with little or no experience of consultation and those with some experience who want to enhance their knowledge and understanding of this area. The course is suitable for those working in the private sector and the public sector involved in consulting on schemes or anyone who wants to understand more about consultation.
